At Glenarty Road, the flock is part of how the farm works. Sheep graze pasture, return nutrients and make a short pass through the vineyard after harvest. Their shedding coat keeps that work simple.
Our breeding intent
Good husbandry begins with time to watch the flock.
No shearing, crutching, mulesing or tailing means fewer routine trips through the yards. Husbandry can stay focused on condition, feet, lambing and nutrition.
Our aim is sheep that move freely, hold condition and raise their lambs well. Each generation must leave the flock more useful than the last.
Glenarty Road has used SheepMaster genetics since 2012. Our rams and ewe lambs are working in flocks across Australia.

A long look.
Then another.
At the first draft, around 150 ram lambs are assessed at six months. Ben and Archer retain approximately 50 and watch them for another twelve months. Twenty generally make the final ram team.
Maternal
A ewe should conceive readily, lamb without unnecessary intervention and raise her lamb well.
Movement
Sound feet and free movement allow sheep to cover country.
Growth & carcase
We want quick growth and a carcase with good prime cut recovery.
Shedding
Loose skin supports a coat that leaves the animal clean without intervention.
Temperament
The flock should be straightforward to handle.
Fourth generation · SheepMaster since 2012
Ben and Archer McDonald.
Ben is the fourth generation to farm Glenarty Road. His eldest son, Archer, is now central to the breeding program.
The home farm began as a dairy before Ben’s father, Peter, moved into sheep in 1960. Ben completed his Diploma of Agriculture in 1995 and returned home to work alongside him.
Ben and Archer class the flock together. They do not always notice the same things, and that is useful. The final decision comes from watching how each animal is put together and how it moves.
Today Glenarty Road runs approximately 1,500 breeding ewes. Rams and truckloads of ewe lambs have been sold to producers across Australia for many years.
The flock is selected in the paddock and the yards, with growth, structure, movement and shedding considered together.

Chosen for sound feet and the ability to shed in Karridale’s high-rainfall environment.
Shedding Poll Dorset
Introduced to add muscle through the hindquarter.

Neil Garnett’s rams were introduced to strengthen reproductive performance in retained ewe lambs.

A shedding coat removes shearing and crutching from the calendar. Retaining tails removes tailing and mulesing. Fewer routine procedures mean less yarding and more time to observe the flock.
